His and Hers: Pop Culture Edition

A Keen Observation

A few years ago while in the middle of one several meetings, I was talking to my roommate about the similarities between sports and entertainment culture for men and women. Suddenly everyone in the room caught on and agreed with me. Sports for men is like the entertainment industry for women.

Think about it. If you're a guy whose girlfriend is talking about the Golden Globes while you are excited about the playoffs, the same factors exist except in different ways. So this hub is for both sides who help to translate what's going on in the mind of your respective counterpart.

Picking and Choosing

If you're a guy, chances are you love sports but really only closely follow a select few. The most popular obviously being basketball, football, baseball, or hockey. Well the same logic applies to women and entertainment. Some of us follow a few fields as opposed to all. For instance, I am an avid television watcher and also love to listen to music. I watch movies and know a tad about fashion but I wouldn't consider them something I know like the back of my hand.

As a result, there are a few events in music and television I follow closely like the Grammys and the Emmys. And so the same could be said for a football and basketball lover who tune in for the NFL Pro-Bowl and the NBA All-Star Game.

Below a guide of sorts:

Music Events/Awards-

  1. Billboard Music Awards
  2. Grammys
  3. American Music Awards
  4. Country Music Awards

Television Events/Awards-

  1. Critics' Choice Television Awards
  2. Emmys
  3. TV Land Awards

Football Events (NFL)-

  1. Pro-Bowl (gathering of elite athletes from both sides of the NFL)
  2. SuperBowl

Basketball Events (NBA)-

  1. All Star Game (essentially b-ball version of Pro-Bowl)
  2. NBA Finals

And if you're interested, for more information there will be links at the end of the hub.

Top Picks

Every woman who follows entertainment usually has a top celeb she follows. I have a few I follow quite closely/admire their work and accomplishments. It's just like a man who has a favorite athlete in whatever sport he follows.

The key here is that you usually relate to the person as a celebrity for their body of work, humanitarian contributions, and last but not least personal exploits. Whether or not you believe them is another story but it's the equivalent of points per game, assists, blocks, steals and so on for a player as well as whatever else you may follow about them.

Athletes have other dimensions than just their actual playing game as to why they are followed sometimes they are considered heroes of the sport, role models, underdogs who rose above adversity and so on. Essentially the common factor between why some women and men follow athletes and celebrities is how well we relate to their public image and their story.

So knowingly sports sites and entertainment sites will outfit themselves to suit the needs and interests of the fans. Again here are some examples.

Sports Information: ESPN.com, SI.com (Sports Illustrated), The Bleacher Report

Celebrity Information: ET Online (Entertainment Tonight), Perez Hilton, TMZ

The Big Game

Every guy knows what network, what time, and who will be in the Super Bowl. The same goes for many women and the Oscars. While I personally can't bear to watch it much longer than seeing paint dry, it does serve as our de facto Super Bowl.

What matters on either day is that each party has the necessary food, technology, and creature comforts necessary to enjoy the day.

Whether it's having your favorite nachos on hand or making sure you wear your trademark jersey, each event is an important bonding ritual. It represents shared interests, a common insight into what makes us tick culturally, what makes us happy, and so on.

Other possible big games:

  1. World Series
  2. The SAG Awards
  3. NHL Stanley Cup
  4. World Cup
  5. Golden Globes

The Grand Finale

So, I hope this hub was as humorous as it was insightful. I figure that this is peak season for both awards and big games so enjoy it while it's here!

And as a final note, while this hub is true to a certain extent it doesn't mean men don't follow celebrity culture or women are clueless about sports. I personally love basketball and by love I mean go technically insane around the time of March Madness. More on that later. But it just goes to show you, there's more than one way to enjoy what life has to offer.

I look forward to your insight and as a treat, I'll leave y'all with this video. Thanks for stopping by and reading!

Alecia,

What a fun article, and what a great observer you are!

Interesting...I'll watch awards shows and some reality TV, but my boyfriend won't. He'll watch football, and I'll watch the game with him...Is this a lopsided picture?!?

Interesting observations Alecia! I was thinking this week, that Superbowl (which I, also detest watching) has come to be a like a national holiday! Tomorrow, & Sunday morning the Supermarkets will be more packed than right before Christmas & Thanksgiving. Really fun, & unique hub. : )

Hi Alecia, I enjoyed your insight into the different perspectives of men and women. The thing that annoys me most about football isn't the game itself, but the constant interruptions of commercials. Without those, I'm sure I would enjoy the game more. Thankfully, my husband agrees and so more than likely we will record the Superbowl and watch it together at a later time!

Daisy,

Thanks again for coming by. I agree that your boyfriend has it too easy. I think every couple should compromise and at least watch one show the other likes and then find something they can watch together.

Jacy,

I definitely think that this is a national holiday for some like the Oscars are for others. I am planning not to go to a Supermarket until after all this hoopla dies down but then Valentine's Day is in less than two weeks. I'll be glad for a subdued March. Thanks for coming by and sharing your thoughts.

Hi Cloverleaf,

I agree about the commercials. I wish they would show those separately so those of us not into football can enjoy it the way we want and football lovers get the game to themselves but of course it's all about the advertising money it rakes in. Thanks for coming by and commenting.

It is a shame football season and award shows seem to come around the same time of year. Thank goodness most households now have more than one TV. What did men and women do when they had to fight over who got to watch which event? Cute hub and voted up!

Jeannie,

I agree. It's like advertisers knew how to divide and conquer but you're right or else my parents and grandparents may not have stayed together if it weren't for multiple television sets. Thanks for dropping by and commenting.
